Dr. Shigeto Kondo is a senior researcher at the JIME (Japanese Institute of Middle Eastern Economies) Center, the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ). He is an expert on the political economy of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Arab states. He obtained his Ph.D. at Keio University in Tokyo with a focus on the foreign policies of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait including the ones during the first oil crisis. Since joining IEEJ, he has been researching both diplomatic and economic aspects of Saudi Arabia. He further covers the climate change cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Japan during his secondment at the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) in Saudi Arabia in 2022. He has been serving as a member of research committees on the Middle East in several organizations in Japan and taught Middle Eastern affairs at several universities. The articles he wrote include “Inter-Arab Politics in the First Oil Crisis: Kuwaiti Role in the Formation of Arab Oil Policies, January-November 1973,” Proceedings of Keio University Graduate School of Law, Studies in Law and Politics (2009), and “Shift in Energy Sources: Impact on Climate Change and the Economic Growth of OPEC Countries,” in Future Trends: The World in the Next 50 Years (TRENDS Research & Advisory, 2023).
