Special Seminar “Shifting Gears: Future of Transportation, Oil Demand and Geopolitics“

Amid the growing expectation and anticipation of a rapid diffusion of electric vehicles
replacing traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, the possibility of sooner or later
peak global oil demand has attracted global interests.
Last year, major European countries, such as France and United Kingdom have taken the
initiatives to ban conventional engine vehicle sales. China and some other countries also
have announced electric vehicle promotion initiatives. Reflecting such policy trend,
automakers are moving to vehicle electrification. Based on these trend, the possibility of
"Peak Oil Demand" is attracting deep interest.
These changes in the global oil market could impact on the economy and social development
of the oil producing countries and also on the global energy geopolitics.

Atlantic Council, Eurasia Group, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) and
Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) will co-host this event, named as “Shifting
Gears: Future of Transportation, Oil Demand and Geopolitics”. This event will discuss the
potential impact from vehicle electrification on the oil demand for transportation, the
possibility of decarbonization, geopolitical impacts and its implication.
