“Threats and Opportunities in the Global Energy Landscape under Great Uncertainty”

1. Objective/theme:
In 2016 IEEJ and APERC will celebrate their 50th and 20th foundation anniversaries respectively. To commemorate this important milestone, IEEJ and APERC are hosting an Anniversary International Joint Symposium.

  • Major changes that have recently taken place could disturb the existing world order (the new Trump administration in the United States, Europe shaken by Brexit and Middle East increasingly in trouble).
  • Under these circumstances, the Symposium will bring together international experts to discuss the effects of such changes on the world energy landscape in terms of threats and opportunities..

 - The ratification of the Paris Climate Agreement signals a positive step towards a global clean energy transition. What will be the role of nuclear and renewable energy resources?
 - Is nuclear truly safe? Can it dispel public concern?
 - Has renewable energy really become cheap? To what degree will its penetration vary country to country or region to region?
 - Does market liberalisation make nuclear or renewable energy unsustainable without governmental support?
 - What other threats and opportunities exist for nuclear and renewable energy?

 - Can economic growth and climate goals be achieved at the same time? Do any of the 3E (Energy Security, Economy, Environmental Protection) have to be given up?
 - Can carbon pricing really be effective to reduce the emissions from fossil fuels?
 - What other threats and opportunities exist for fossil fuels, especially coal?
